Hi. It's me again, the rocker chic with the desire to slice
up my t-shirts. I was wondering...I know you said you have a book
coming out in 2005, but I really would like something before. Is
there any way that you could give me info or "How To" directions
now. I would be willing to pay for this information. Maybe a book
or just diagrams. Or, if you can't divulge this information, maybe
you can direct me to a place where I can find it or a book I can
buy. I know this is a lot to ask for, but if you could help me,
that would be awesome. And, if you can't, I do understand..THANX

Jennifer, we can very easily ans. your ques. but it's much
better if you give us a call. 212-268-4321. mon to sat 12:00 to
6:00. This skirt is a "hipster" so it doesn't hang from your waist
it, it hangs on your body at your high hip. Follow the pictures
in the instructions. Everyone says our instructions and patterns
are much easier to follow than the big pattern companies.

I just recently purchased your pattern for the 1/4 circle
skirt and can't seem to figure out how to cut it out. I've cut the
pattern according to my "high-hip" measurements, but how do you
determine where to cut for the waistline? Do you fold the fabic
at all before you cut? I'd come to your class but I live in Texas!
Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Jennifer

For cheap fabrics, I'd suggest ebay under fabrics. There
are all sorts - cotton, wool, silk, etc. I got 5 yards of a lovely
cotton print. It was 5 yards, 60" wide for $6.75 and $6.00 shipping
and handling. I have rheumatoid arthritis and can no longer sew,
so if you knows people in Houston who sew, I'd appreciate the names.
Oh yes, I'm on a strict budget. Donna Walker

I'd like to buy a dress form, but haven't been able to find
one that will adjust for my PETITE frame. I am 5'2'' AND short-waisted
(Small bustline(A),Back length = 13.5in) I wear a 4p-6p depending
on the designer. I'm frustrated shopping the options in petite sizes
are limitted and mostly too conservative. Junior sizes are too tall
and slim (and often poorly made). The dress forms I've seen advertized
won't adjust enough. I think I may be able to fit a vintage form.
(Women were shorter) Any ideas? Theresa

course a pillow, a drawstring backpack, and a locker caddy. Pretty
simple designs, all using squares as you would in pillow making.

with simple applique techniques. Wish me luck! Dee

Hi! :-) I would like to know if anyone has ever had any
problems with the early 80's model Sears Kenmore Sewing Machine
Model # 158-17911. Days after I got the thing the foot pedal or
something, messed up causing a 4 or 5 overstitch when you released
the foot pedal. It's very aggravating to try to sew with. And Sears
wouldn't fix the thing either at the time. Anyone else had this
problem and how would I go about fixing it? Thanks Anna :-)

Hi out there. I'm in a desperate situation. I'm sewing a
dress for my very plus-size sister-in-law that she will be wearing
to her son's wedding in late June. The problem is that I didn't
think she was as big as she measured. We have already picked the
pattern and have discovered that it does not come in a big enough
size. I'm not all that experienced in making the alterations for
her figure type (very big bust area, and big seat, small in the
back shoulder area). Does anyone know if there is a place that I
could send this pattern to have it altered to her size specifications?
I live in Vancouver BC Canada. I really won't mind if I have to
send it far away. I'm desperate! Please help me. Geraldine

that manufacturers use in collapsable kid's tents, etc?" I don't
know what it is called, but Wal-Mart, and many sporting goods stores
carry replacements for the tent frames. Usually they are in pieces
that are about 30" in length which are strung together. Dawn

Hi Dee. I live in Brooklyn, and my office is in Manhattan,
right across from FIT. There are two pillows made from chenille,
and two pillows are made from a blend that's a little heavier, along
the lines of a damask. I'm not sure, but I think the stuffing that
was used was an inexpensive poly blend that is sold in a lot of
sewing supply stores by the bag. christine

Dee, I think that is wonderful that you teach sewing to
young adults! My mother discouraged me from taking Home Ec, and
I really regret not taking it. Maybe Home Ec should be renamed:
Basic Survival Skills. I am learning to sew now with help from my
mother-in-law and sister-in-law, and of course the fabulous book
"Sew Fast Sew Easy." So far I have made a few pillows and several
tote bags. Next is the skirt. What sort of projects do you teach
your students? I am looking for more beginner projects to sharpen
my skills. Madge

I fell upon your site and think it's wonderful!! What a
great place for people to ask questions! I don't see any mentions
of Bernina machines here though. I own four. An ancient 930 that
works like a tank, a cover stitch machine, and two sergers. I've
sewn on a lot of machines in my day, but I don't think I'll ever
change brands again!! I would love to stop by and visit your place
next time I'm in the city. There should be more "upbeat" sewing
classes. I teach middle school students how to sew...it seems that
I always have a full class! Dee

Hmm. Quite a thread here, I love it! Anyone know what that
springy wire is that manufacturers use in collapsable kid's tents,
etc? Know where I can get some for a school production's large monster
costume I said I'd make? The stuff is cool, is holds shape for large
fabric "structures", yet it can be twisted and folded in upon itself
to collapse and be sensible for storage. what the heck is that wire?
Is it some kind of spring steel? Can I find it at a store, or do
I need to look at steel manufacturing shops? Help puhlease ?!? -Melissa_

Shirley, A serger is a five thread version of an overlock
machine. It will overlock and at the same time sew a chain sititch.
If you look at the in seam of most blue jeans you will see an example
of this stitch. an OverLock machine is a four thread machine and
generally sews a good four thread stitch as well as a "pearl edge"
stitch as they call it in the garment industry. The home sewing
industry calls it a "rolled hem". We Sell the juki 644D for $299.
and we ship it direct. We love this machine for knits and wovens.
it really does the job needed to sew knits and trim seams and the
rolled hem is the best. We will give instruction on how to use it
in our place but it costs extra. SewFastSewEasy

yes, you will be able to make a duvet cover and so many
other things you dreamed of. Every year we get people asking if
any of us sewers will make prom dresses. The answer is you should
make it and if you start in classes now by Prom time you can have
your own gorgeous Design and be really noticed. The process of sewing
is such an enjoyable experience. So many people are missing out
on what gives great joy to life and that is the creative process.

The best way to repair tulle is with fuse tape or as it's
called Stitch Witchery. It cost's $2.35 a roll and we sell it. I
glue the two torn pieces together by inserting the stitch witchery
in between the tulle and fusing it with the heat of an iron. We
used to repair tons of Ballet tutu's on Broadway that way.

I just found your website and I love it. I am a beginning
sewer and have only just learned how to use a pattern (well just
gotten up enough nerve). I have made several things in the past,
skirts, duvet covers, pillows, etc. and using a pattern I have made
a skirt and top and a few purses. I have registered for a pattern
fitting and sewing class March 8 and I can't wait. Right now I am
wanting to alter some ready-to-wear (I found a formal black gown
for $20 and couldn't pass it up). I want to make the dress more
flattering to my shape. My problem is that I don''t know hoe I'm
to make the adjustments without a dressmaker's dummy. (I've even
thought about having my son who's 11 put on my bra and stuff it
and model the dress for me, but I don't want to pay for therapy
in the future). What to do? I need to do the alterations this week
as I need the dress for a formal ball Sat. night. Any help would
be greatly appreciated. vickisartin@aol.com vicki

That's what's hurting the fashion industry today. People
who confuse knocking off with "inspirational". Finding fabrics,
trimming, etc. is easy. I know fashion designers recycle the past
and design for a more modern aesthetic, but if you enjoy "creating"
so much, why don't you "create" something original, and not something
that already has public approval. Gina

It's funny how you seem to be so angry about knocking off
something when it's done every day in every industry encluding the
garment industry. How ever you can knock-off and think for yourself
by changing the fabric, color, trim and porportion. Somtimes knocking
off is just meant as "inspirational." Besides I was in Leslie's
classes and I do think she could sure beat the creative pants off
a lot of people. So Why not try making something yourself instead
of wasting your time being the "creative Police". one

To Madelene, Yes any one from the age of 12 and up can take
sewing classes here. To the gals who are haveing tension problems
on their sewing machines. First always check to make sure you are
REALLY threading your machine properly. AS you move the tension
dial up on your machine the top sewing thread will become tighter
and tighter. The stitch length will not affect the tension of your
machine. SewFastSewEasy

Dear Fringe Woman.... You've come to the right place...
You didn't mention if you live near NYC, because, if you do, SFSE
can teach you a lot more than simple sewing. In one year I took
their full complement of courses and recently made a faux fur winter
coat that has people stopping me on the street asking where I bought
it, then asking me if I sell them anywhere. (Heaven forfend!) I
just like to decorate myself and design my own stuff. The thing
is, at SFSE's classes, they teach you how to do that, how to think
for yourself, yes, even how to thread a bobbin correctly 97% of
the time. If you purchase your machine through them, they'll walk
you through it's functions, and I recommend this. Also, there are
a lot of cool, creative people there. I'm 40, and I never found
the place full of 20 somethings... In fact, it's mostly cool, curious,
creative people. They'll help you figure out exactly which machine
you need. And if you take the classes, you end up with basic patterns
that are customized for your body, plus the know-how to patternmake
your own. Fringe is a cinch. I'm talking changing the lines of a
garment. Altering your own stuff. And goodbye fabric glue. And,
no, I'm not on their payroll. I just have a really cool wardrobe
(much of the fabric from Reprodepot), a collection of photos of
things I'm planning to knock off, and a really cool hobby. Good
luck! Leslie
- Thursday, February 05, 2004 at 09:31:46 (EST)
Hi! I need some advice here, and to introduce myself. I
puchased the book on RepotDepot fabrics. I am a ...well, fashion
whore. Maybe that is not the right word....for decades (OK, maybe
2) I have dreamed about creating my own clothing, totes, etc. I
went through a BAD period in my 20's....complusive shopper because
I had trouble finding what I was looking for, so I'd buy it all
or if it hd one feature I liked...anyway, I'm recovering now. When
I was 18 I took a beginner's sewing class. I was the oldest one
there...most were WAY ahead of me and many had not hit puberty.
Yikes. I just wanted to make sure short tight simple minis. Keep
in mind this is the 80' s and technology has changed. Good thing,
because the thing that discouraged me was the bobbin threading.
This goes here, put this here, slip this around here, careful, now
this should go here, thread the needle...she had to come and show
me every time. For years I took in items for alterations. Then I
discovered fabric glue. I have been able to make some surprisinly
nice-looking hems, lower-cut bodices, and lately, glue on fringe.
(Most of my fashions are retro, and as 60's go-go dancer (well-I'm
not THAT old, I get hired to go-go dance austin powers-style) and
I had to look down to see cloud nine when I realized I could NOW
MAKE MY OWN FRINGE DRESSES!!! I also am considering making my own
line of purses, totes, ec but I am getting ahead of myself. My husband
is buying me a sewing machine for my 36th b-day,coming up in a week.
I know, less thana week to research a good model. We wanted--well,
I wanted--to get one before, but we had no room. We still are in
the same tiny house, but when I started seriously looking over the
past year, I found how compact machines had gotten. We can make
it work. I guess the advice would be on a good beginner's--but something
I can still use in 5 -10years (not ULTRA basic )model. Here is what
is important to me: •EASE of threading •I am not planning on doing
any fancy embroidery, do 80 different stiches is not this big issue,
*Fairly idiot-proof--I am not a genius, but I am a fast learner
when motivated. *I plan to sew mainly: totes, very simple tops and
dresses (say a tube top with some groovy 60's pattern) and to be
able to sew on the fringe. Sequins would be nice, but I don't think
you CAN do sequins except by hand. The most elaboate would be sewing
on yards of dangling beads or fringe, for now. No blouses, pants
beyond simple clean-waist no pocket no-frills capris (pull on).
I'd probably have to work on that. Simple shell tops, sleveless-almost
everything would be sleeveless or spaghetti straps. No big puffy
hoop skirts or dresses. Very simple is about all I can handle. I
would also very much like to be able to embroider on patches. *if
possible, an instructional video. •again-something that will last
me. Out price range is up to 600 dollars but something in the 300$
range would be good (or less). I have it narrrowed down to 2 models
and could list them...they warned me about get something "too fancy"
for beginners, but later on when I branch out...might need it. Again,
though, getting ahead of myself. Here are the models- hopeit is
Ok to list- 1.Janome, harmony series Model 8048 "(Easy threader")
2.Singer model 2950-they pointed out it takes a thicker lift (yes,
I know I sound like an idiot for my lack of lingo-but I'm reading
it! I really am!), for sewing on fringe, etc. ANY advice is apprecaited-hoping
someone will say, "well, for your needs, the Janome is your best
bet" since they were not ultra helpful at Hancock. Or, recommend
another model-that would be great! Please! If you want to write
to me directly you can (just ask) but i would like to get a discussion
going. Thanks for listening to my long-winded post and thanks in
advance for any advice. I am so new to this it is embarasssing-
bythe way the book rocks, I am so sick of "FOr Dummies" books and
this is perfect. Peace out, Kitten Kitten

Help! I recently got some Sunbrella marine/awning fabric
at an incredible price and want to make roller blinds out of it.
It seemed so simple. Then people started telling me stuff!
LOL Do I need to stiffen this fabric??? It's been folded - how do
I get the creases out? (I'd iron but the website says 'don't apply
heat!'. Will it be reasonably light blocking (No nude outlines for
the neighbors, please) or do I need to back it? If it needs something
to make it capable of privacy, can I spray/iron something on? Sewing
a backing would make the material impractical for shades. Please

for hagathamugwort - try changing your sewing machine needle
more often. Sewing tends to blunt needles and make them rough on
the tip - thus catching on the thread and shredding (breaking) it.
I know, I know, needles cost money, etc., but they are cheaper than
a shrink, which you'll need if the thread keeps breaking. Squirrelly

Although I haven't found an official website for Omega Machines,
you can do a search on Google & come up with a variety of sites
that can help you locate or download an instruction manual for the
machine. There is a wonderful shop called "Spacesaver Hardware"
on 23rd Street between 6th & 7th Avenues, & they carry & repair
a variety of sewing machines, as well as zippers, needles, craft
supplies & almost anything else you might need for sewing, quilting,
knitting, etc. They are 3 stores down from L.P. Thur Fabrics, which
also carry a large supply of regular & ordinary type fabrics. I
hope this helps those of you whose questions I read. Good Luck

I went there the other day in search of something else, but what
an amazing store. If you need it anything plastic go there or Plastic

Ann, I am left handed and very proud to say that It has
never stopped me from sewing, designing patternmaking, and many crafts
as well as other things. In fact it's been said that left handed
people are more creative than right handed people. So I don't know
of any books that can help you just register for classes or try
some of our products and you will be sewing up a storm if you really
want to. Elissa at SewFastSewEasy

Just finished the second level class and wanted to say I
learned way more then I could have anticipated, and Deborah was
a fantastic teacher. I also wanted to add that that last tip (to
simply zigzag the bottom hem of a felt skirt) has given me a delirious
release from my previous incarceration in hem-hell and I am greatly
indebted -- as well as are all who have had the misfortune to be
around me when something has been in the process of going very.
very. wrong. So thanks again– and can’t wait for a third level class
to be offered again (hint, hint.) justina

Generally most machines are built to handle a range of different
types of fabrics provided that the machine is working properly.
There are also the right sewing needles for certain fabrics and
the right sewing feet to help you sew the fabric, tension and stitch
length. This we show to our students and customers when they purchase
their machine from us. SewFastSewEay

Ray -- I'd been looking for a snap machine too and someone
from this site had recommended the store Steinlauf and Stoller on
39th street. They're great though their machines were a little out
of my price range (upwards of 200 after you figure in the die-sets)
-- however they will install individual grommets and snaps for you
at the store really inexpensively. Also, I ended up buying one used
for about half that price off of Craigs List (www.craigslist.com,
or .org) but I'd recommend first going to Steinlauf if only to see
all the different options -- also they're really nice. jw

To Addict & April -- Seconding the suggestion of "Try the
company website." I have an old used machine from the 70's or 80's
and I never had the manual -- wrote to the company (White) on their
site and they sent me a manual about a week later. QUESTION: My
machine has been fantastic and put up with a lot of abuse but before
it spazzes back at me in return for what I've put it through are
there any routine maintenace things I can do myself -- not repairs
-- just ways to clean it so it'll keep running smoothly?

- Saturday, November 15, 2003 at 18:52:26 (EST)
To tina williams, Generally most sewing machines thread
by feeding your thread through the needle eye from the front of
the machine towards the back. If you put a white business card behind
the eye of the needle, the business card will refract the light
in a way that you will be able to see the eye of the needle very
clearly. Some older models of sewing machines thread from the left
side of the needle through to the right. SewFastSewEasy
- Thursday, November 13, 2003 at 19:02:35 (EST)
For Megan, Even if you have the most expensive machine in
the world sometimes you have to make some adjustments to get the
fabric to feed through and get good stitch quality. With thick fabrics
you should try making you stitch length a little larger so the feed
dogs will grab more of your fabric. Or you can try using a roller
foot or walking foot which also helps feeding the fabric through
your machine. And sometimes the very best thing can be some good
old hand techniques such as picking up the pressor foot and moving
the fabric a bit if it's stuck. For sure your necchi Quilter is
the best quality machine at its price point. SewFastSewEasy

Cris ,you could take it to Sears in your area, they specialize
in Kenmore Sewing Machines and maybe you could see if they have
a manual for it. Most Kenmore sewing machines thread the same. Or
just take it to a place that sells sewing machines and they could
help you thread it. Marie

I want to make pillows for my couch... is there a general
rule for the sizing of the covers in relation to the pillow inserts?
I found a website that said the insert should be 2" larger than
the cover... but I wanted to get some advice before starting. Thanks!

Ok, y'all... WHERE can I find SILESIA? It is a pocketing
fabric. I bought some from Atlanta Thread and Supply, but it is
not NEARLY the quality I purchased from Mary Ellen Flury a few years
back. I would LOVE to find who HER supplier was, as I have not been
able to get in touch with her again. It is soft, and has a beautiful
finish, almost a sheen. If you know of any place that I have not
already seen on the web (I know you can read minds!), please email
me at lizbarefoot@bigfoot.com. please. and I thank you!

Hi all, I need a reliable source (preferably in NYC) for
extra stiff interfacing. I can find it at the in the garment district
sometimes, but haven't found a store that has it all the time. It's
the kind that is used for handbags or hats. It's kind of a pain
to work with because it scratches and pokes me, but I need it! Thanks,

Has anyone used a Singer Tiny Serger? Do they work well
and faster than a regular sewing machine? I am looking for a machine
that can do an overlock stitch quickly but do not intend on doing
enough sewing to justify buying a full size serger. The singer tiny
serger seems the right price and size, but I don't want to waste
any money if it performs like a standard sewing machine. If anyone
has personal experience with this or another low priced machine
available, please send your comments to heznrich@adelphia.net. Thank
you for your time. Heather

Grandmother and recently deceased Aunt used. The machine works.
but the instruction book is missing. Does anyone recognize the brand

Megan-- Thanks for the hint on Steinlauf & Stoller (sp?)
Went to them to get two grommets put in a wallet -speedy, nice &
inexpensive but couldn't afford the whole machine ( upwards of $200
after I got the die-sets, etc.) and on a whim tried posting on Craig's
List -- got a response in one day and a beatiful used one for a
quarter of the price. Now I've just got to try and figure and how
to use it . . . Also to whoever was looking for an inexpensive sewing
machine I saw in the Target flier this week ( gotta read my Sunday
fliers) that they have a Singer machine for $89 . No clue if it
can hold up to heavy use but seemed like a good deal. Also question:
trying to make a hip belt and I've got facing to keep the shape
but I want to add soemthing to make it really heavy and stay on
my hips -- does anyone know if there are fabric weights that you
can put in a hem? I remember reading something a while back about
the Queen mum having weights in her skirt to keep it from being
blown upwards when she was getting out of helicopters at press events.
Not that photo ops are such an inherent part of my social schedule
but seemed like they might be useful. If not I guess I could just
hand sew in washers or something from the hardware store but was
hoping there might be something flat and machine stichable.

Hello. I'm new this site and just LOVE this cafe. I am hope
that someone will be able to help me. I am looking for ribbon that
I believe is sold in NYC. It is 7/8" navy, yellow or pink embroidered
ribbon. I have seen embroidered alligators, lobsters, elephants,
monkeys, giraffes, frogs, pineapples, etc. I have seen these ribbons
used on ribbon belts but I want to use them on my handbags. I live
in California and can't seem to find a listing of all the trimming
places in the garment district. If anyone knows where I can find
a listing of trimming/ribbon shops or knows the name of the place
where I can find this riboon, I would be so grateful!! Please make
a post or email me at: caryndesigns@yahoo.com. Thank you and God
Bless! Caryn Monroe
