I've been thinking---Since we all have so many creative ideas, why don't we come up with a new trend. Why not set a trend rather than follow all those magazine trends anD stars. For example, sew a way out demin skirt that can be sexy and worn anywhere. Make and wear a fabric belt with your cell phone hanging from it. Any one got some idea's to start a trend??? SEW OR KNIT OR CROCHET AND GET A HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

ANY PLANS OF HAVING A SHEARLING COAT MAKING CLASS? I was on Orchard street yesterday and found the most Beautiful Shearling coat!!!! I can't stop thinking about it. I need help! I talked the guy down from $1200 to $800. I absolutely cannot afford this! Oh- P.S. After taking your leather bag making class, I've discovered a really cheap Canadian vendor for skins. (No tax - No fees) He's sending me samples this week, so I'll keep you posted. And I so miss taking your classes! I'm asking for level 2 for x-mas.

Thank God I'm not the only woman in her thirties knitting. My friends all make fun of me, but I love it. So glad to see other women my age doing it! What about posting some patterns? I have been looking for a halter top pattern and thought someone here might know where to find one. If so please email me. Also, if anyone else comes to this site from Atlanta - I'd love to start a knitting group here, feel free to email me about that too!

I want to thank everyone at Sew Fast Sew Easy for a wonderful learning experience. I recently finished my Level 4 bodice sewing class (my sixth class at SFSE) and I still can't get over how much I've learned and how quickly I've been able to apply my new skills to REAL design projects of my own! Your classes were so thorough. And I have to say, those computer-fit patterns were worth the price of the classes just by themselves. I love being able to whip up a pair of pants that fit me PERFECTLY any time I feel like it. I don't even have to question it -- if I pick up a cute fabric somewhere and use my SFSE dress pattern, I know it's going to look great and I can plan on wearing it to work the next morning. I wonder what people with custom-tailored wardrobes pay to have such a good fit every day of the week? It feels good to do it for myself. And if my measurements ever change, I know how to make the proper adjustments -- you taught me how! I got so much out of my SFSE experience. I will recommend you highly to anyone with a burning passion for do-it-yourself fashion.

Can't wait for Friday's Faux Fur class! I was in Betsey Johnson this weekend and admired the stoles she had for $100 and up! I thought "I can make those" and low and behold I find out there is a fur class on Friday! To the person who asked about purse handle suppliers. I am planning on ordering from these people myself. I can't vouch for their services but they seem to have a good variety and decent prices. If anyone know of anything cheaper please let us know! http://www.umei.com/fashion-handbag-handle.htm

So,I found out on Tuesday that I had to go to a wedding on Saturday, and I had "nothing to wear". I picked up the ballroom-bustle-pattern on Thursday, spent 20$ on the fabric; and three hours later....va-va-voom I have this beautiful skirt that looks GREAT! And thanks to the drawstring I can eat as much as I want at the wedding. The pattern is great!

just visited your site for the first time, i am a quilter and part time sewer ( mostly for my grandson) so it feels like a bonanza to find your site. Found the store by accident on sunday and am looking forward to actually seeing it . We have a fairly active sewing community here in staten island but purchasing fabric is a real problem. We usually have to go to nj or pa or resort to mail order, if anyone knows of good fabric stores within a reasonable distance who carry 100% cottons as well as other fabrics please respond. thanks, myra

I took classes at SFSE about 5 years ago. I have been sewing off-and-on ever since, but always keep interested in some way (frequenting fabric stores, looking at patterns, and such). I have a few questions. 1. Does anyone know of a good quality, reasonably-priced dressmaker? I love custom-made clothes, but I can't sew everything that I want/need myself. (I have basic skills and won't have a lot of time to sew in the future). The best way to find a dressmaker is by word-of-mouth from satisfied customers, but no one in my circles knows anyone with such skills. I live in one of the outer boroughs, but I'll go anywhere in the city (maybe even northern Jersey or Westchester) for the right dressmaker(s). I would prefer a specialist in plus-sizes or someone who understands plus-size needs. 2. I'm looking for a sewing buddy or buddies to help me make a custom dress-form (the inexpensive, but accurate, brown tape kind). Since everyone I know has neither the inclination nor the patience for such things I'm looking for some sewing buddies who are in a similar boat. We would sew projects for practicality and fun, meet to help each other on projects, shop for fabric and patterns together, be sounding boards for each other on a more-or-less informal basis. In other words, we help each other out with sewing projects, tips and ideas, but we don't have to meet every second Tuesday (unless we want to) and there is no financial commitment. If anyone is interested in forming a Sewing Buddies Circle please let me know (email). I'm putting the word out there now, because I want to start new projects in January, and I want to give people some time to think about it and start looking at what they would like to accomplish in the new year, and how we might be able to help each other. Looking forward to your comments and suggestions. Sincerely, S.

hi all, a couple of comments. I checked the prices all over ny and found sew fast sew easy's to be the cheapest. Having taken all 4 of the 4-part series classes I have been liberated and now make my own clothes- they're cool and comfortable - I have created my own style. I just finished sewing a full length leather skirt - and used my computer fit pattern. It's sexy, fits like a glove and cheaper by hundreds for what you would pay if you bought retail. Give it a try cassandra and you too will enter the "zen of sewing"

Besides, the real estate is much cheaper than in N.Y. I'd love to visit and am keeping a close eye on the classes offered. I am an advanced sewist and am interested in teaching sewing. I have taken all four of the four part series classes, and lemme tell ya, they were definitely worth it. I never felt like sewing before, when I would buy pre-made paper patterns because it was too confusing, the pattern often didn't fit me right, and I didn't know what I was doing!! In classes at SFSE, it was great because I got a pattern based on my measurements (that they take before the class starts) and the classes aren't that big, so you get real help from the teacher. In short, I think the price is worth it...it's not that much if you think of how many hours of class you get plus the custom pattern.

Cassandra, These classes are the best classes in the country. I've taken classes in many places but this is the only place you get your own custom fit patterns, a beginner sew workbook, real exciting teachers, the most creative inspiration, fast professional sewing skills and small classes. So isn't that worth it! I am now making my own wedding dress as a result of SewFastSewEasy.

Okay, hope I don't come across like a complete cheap freak, but... these classes seem really expensive to me. Sharon there could be many things wrong with your machine and also not knowing how to sew could add too it. Suggestion-- take your machine to the local repair man. But before you do that read your ins. manual that comes with the machine. Change your needle. Check to see if the machine is threaded properly. Come to New york and take some of our sewing classes.

In response to painting fabric....If you're using acrylic paint which is non-toxic there is no danger of wearing it next to your skin. I've been painting fabric for years using Liquidtex thinned with water. The results are very similar to fabric that has been dyed.

I am really interested in fashion designing and fashion construction. I would like to have my own clothing line and eventually open my own store. I was wondering if anyone was aware of a fashion school in N.Y., besides F.I.T or Parsons School Of Design, that has a reasonable tuition where I can study ethnic fashion. It is 11:20 Friday evening and I am slowly sipping my delicious Absolut Gimlet revelling in my new skirt. Thee ballroom bustle skirt that is. Thee is not a type -o. I meant to say thee and it is not the alcohol talking it is me. I truely hesitated to take this class because I thought I would look like I had a beach ball in my behind. All kidding aside i was a little curious as to which fabric would best suit me. After all if I was going to spend the time and money I wanted to be excited. Excited is not the word. Ecstatic is more like it. If someone had seen me tonite at the end of class who didn't know me I am not sure what they would have thought. She's either a crazy or really pleased with her project. Both are true. For $14. I made an awesome skirt and you can too. Sign up. It's worth it.

I found that darts take care of a lot of the bulk. Depending on the shirt you may or may not want to shorten it. I recently bought myself a dressform. That has made all of my sewing tasks much easier and would definitely make the job of altering shirts much easier. Good luck.

My sister & I would like to design and sew our own handbags and try to sell them to retailers. Where can we buy fabric at a reasonable price. Any other helpful tips are greatly appreciated. Thanks

Great Site. I have a burning desire to channel some creative energy into sewing classes. I was wondering if anyone knew of some Really BASIC Beginners sewing classes in the South Jersey/Philly area. Thanks for your help.

yea, for those of you that don't know - you can order the bustle back skirt pattern from the store section of this site http://www.sewfastseweasy.com/store.html one funny thing about sewing your own clothes is there are no washing instructions! no tags to help. oh well, cold water everything.

It's so true that the sewing machine is an artist's tool! You can make anything on it! And not everything even has to be practical. Just let yourself explore.

There are many artists communities all around the world. So many of them help artists and craft people with studios to work in and wonderful instructors so you will learn more. All these places specialize in certain crafts, fine art, writing, etc. Fiber arts and mixed media are rapidly becoming well known areas of art and crafts. In Maine you can contack Haystacks at ww.haystack-mtn.org. or call 207-348-2307. There is also Penland School of Crafts in Penland. NC. or you can purchase a book that was shown to me by one of the students who comes to S.F.S.E. called Artists Communities pub.by Allworth Press 10 east 23rd st. N.Y, 10010. I advise that if you don't know how to use a sewing machine to take some classes at our store or Puchase the Pouch bag at Shop at S.F.S.E. so you can get comfortable with a machine. It is an artists tool. Also look for our beginner sew book which will be out next fall. And we are adding some interesting fiber art classes in the fall. Sew be creative start to empower yourself.

sure! are you planning on going? it was cheap, relatively, to fly down there - $461 from NYC. and it was really lovely. the high Andes moutains, the misty coast of Lima (lots of pollution too though in Lima). people down there were friendly and it was pretty easy to get around. go!

I love this site! I am looking for a class/teacher/tutor in the Philly area for pattern drafting and fitting techniques for plus sizes. Even a more advanced sewing buddy would help just for inspiration/motivation. Help!
