Merry, merry! I knit scarves for my mom, sister, and sister-in-law and they loved em! Fun. Also, I knit on the plane ride home and it ate up the time. randi USA - Tuesday, December 28, 1999 at 16:01:21 (EST) I think the MTA sucks. All that money in surplus. So were did it all go. Why didn't someone say, let put some away for all the hard working employees? This contract is the pits. NO, I'M NOT JUST TALKING ABOUT THE 12%. Lets see if this passes. It's going to be close. It's good I have so much fabric at home. Work is so stressfull now that I come home to sew before I go to bed. Just can't sleep without creating something for myself. My sewing room is my haven. All my troubles just seems to wash away. Evelyn Bunbury <sewlove@yahoo.com> Bronx, NY USA - Thursday, December 16, 1999 at 23:32:57 (EST) oooo totes! sounds fun. girlie girl USA - Thursday, December 16, 1999 at 19:54:28 (EST) Everyone's getting totes and drawstring bags for the holidays. If I make enough, I may have enough room in my apartment for more fabric. Happy holidays! Suzie USA - Wednesday, December 15, 1999 at 16:25:26 (EST) Hey, webgirl...If the sequins are soft, sew right through them! If they're really thick, clip them out of your sewing path. FYI..the sequins with the hole near the edge are called paillettes! Deebie USA - Wednesday, December 15, 1999 at 16:22:42 (EST) I'm finally going to be able to take a class! YEAH!! Don't waste your time on long lines, MAKE IT. Pillow, throws, scrave, or even hats are great last minute gifts. Yesterday, I made a knit dress for myself. Got up to go to the hairdressers, and needed something to put on my head. Will, Just a little bit of left over fabric I now have a head wrap.It took 5 mins top. OK, after messing up the first time it just took only 5 mins to make. I got a bunch and they're going on a skirt this weekend. I'm also planning a bag to match! Move over Prada! I'm so excited! Kristen Brooklyn, NY USA - Friday, November 05, 1999 at 11:46:20 (EST) Any colors go, in my book! I've got a stack of cloth I swore I'd make in to Fall clothes, but maybe now they will be my Winter things. They're all wool and thick. Gotta get sewing. Sometimes it is hard to start up. amy brooklyn, USA - Thursday, November 04, 1999 at 17:56:23 (EST) I took the "bag your bottle class" last year and I got so inspired by a chinese brocade fabric, that I sewed the neatest bag for the wine bottle I'm taking to a dinner party next week. In fact now I'm sewing bags for bottles like crazy for Thanksgiving and Christmas gifts. So what do you think of shocking pink satin with a purle satin linning? chris New York, USA - Sunday, October 31, 1999 at 12:51:39 (EST) webgirl <webgirl@sewfastseweasy.com> USA - Wednesday, October 27, 1999 at 14:21:41 (EDT) Hey - for all you North Williamsburg and Greenpoint chickees looking for good fabric, I'd like to recommend STYLE FABRICS at 675 Manhattan Ave (above Bedford). Marie Bauer there is awfully nice and has a lovely selection of fabrics with some gorgeous wools and she has great prices too. Enjoy! Liz Glamour <lglamour@pipeline.com> Brooklyn, NY USA - Wednesday, October 27, 1999 at 00:47:10 (EDT) i just made a pair of pants and used aqua piping down the sides for a look tres special! webgirl nyc, USA - Tuesday, October 26, 1999 at 14:28:30 (EDT) Whow I just finisted a pant class and I already made four pairs of pants that fit so great my friends want to know where they can get them. Rosiao the teacher was the best. she taught us garment industry tips I never knew. I learned so much from all of you thanks. D. Brooklyn, USA - Sunday, October 24, 1999 at 16:18:00 (EDT) Hey, it's me again. I just wanted to come on and recommend some shops you might be interested in. They're all trimming stores, and you can find some pretty amazing stuff in these 3 stores. Toho Shoji Inc. is an amazing store. They sell ornaments, findings, beads, components, buttons, and chains among other amazing stuff. The variety in this store will cater to everyone. They are located at 990 6th Avenue between 36th and 37th Streets. Their hours are Mon.-Fri.:10am-7pm; Sat.: 10am-5pm. They sell wholesale and retail. M&J Buttons and M&J Trimmings are the bomb. They are located at 1000 6th Ave between 37th and 38th Streets. M&J Trimmings is at 1008 6th Avenue, two stores down from M&J Buttons. They sell everything. At M&J Buttons, I saw bamboo handles, tortise shell hair clips, the possibilities are endless. You guys gotta check them out. Trust me, you will not go home empty-handed. Rachel <dafoxx_1999@yahoo.com> USA - Thursday, October 21, 1999 at 19:40:20 (EDT) Hi everybody!!! I hope you remember me. I miss you so much but now I am working until late hours at night and I can take classes unless they are Friday or Saturday. I will keep checking the website for Level 3 and 4 on Friday or Saturday. I saw my picture in the photo gallery (with the navy blue kimono) and I got sooooooooo excited that my eyes watered. I keep myself sane with my sewing. I use my patterns from level 1 and 2 all the times. In addition, I have done more kimonos (from the kimono class) and the bags for bottles. Thank you so much for being there, believe or not, you are very special to me. Hope to see you soon!! Regards, Jackie Jacqueline De Leon <jdeleon30@hotmail.com> Staten Island, NY USA - Tuesday, October 12, 1999 at 22:38:46 (EDT) Yea, the Friday Night Stich and Bitch at SFSE was great. Fun to see everyone's cool creations --- and inspiring! I want to get on a "sewing tear" as Leigh put it. Also, break a leg, Farah, Level I teacher at SFSE, and author of the previous Stitch and Bitch rant --- she's now in Broadway's Saturday Night Fever! webgirl <webgirl@sewfastseweasy.com> USA - Monday, October 11, 1999 at 13:20:04 (EDT) I went to the highly recommended Mood Fabrics today. I loved it!!!!! The prices aren't expensive and there so much variety!!! I was shocked when I found this gorgeous Chinese silk linen on sale for $5 a yard. And the color range is beautiful. I have so many ideas for that fabric. I would like to recommend a fabric store. It's a little on the expensive side, but it is very worth it. It's called NY Elegant Fabrics 222 West 40th Street (between 7th and 8th Avenues), 212.302.4984/4980. They sell wholesale and retail. I came home with atleast a dozen swatches from that store alone. The fabric they have there is amazing. The splurge is worth it, if you want to make something really special. I also have another recommendation for Sew Fast Sew Easy: I'm pulling my hair out trying to find a pattern similar to the leather motorcylce jackets, that are the hottest trend now. Why don't you start a class for constructing (including a pattern) these stylish motorcycle jackets?? I rather make one and put my own little twist on it rather than buy one. Can you help a girl out??? Rachel <dafoxx_1999@yahoo.com> Brooklyn, NY USA - Monday, October 11, 1999 at 12:52:34 (EDT) I had a great time at the stich and bitch on Friday night. It was a lot of fun. What fabulous clothes everyone is sewing! Since you all were raving so much about Mood Fabrics, I decided to check it out on Saturday morning. It lived up to the praise! Debbie, thanks for the tip about the Jean Paul Gaultier mesh fabric with the art designs tucked in the back of the store. They had a couple designs with paintings from India, which I feel in love with. So my next project is a skirt out of the fabric. I'll let you know how it turns out. Debby <dshdar@aol.com> USA - Sunday, October 10, 1999 at 10:12:21 (EDT) here's the page with the fabric stores! FABRICS! USA - Thursday, October 07, 1999 at 10:33:40 (EDT) If your looking for stretch wovens click on fabric stores we love. All those stores from time to time have stretch woven fabrics. Just ask them to show you the stretch wovens they have. Gool Luck, and even Thai silks in calif or otherwise called Exotic silks has stretch silks that are beautiful. Elissa big A, USA - Wednesday, October 06, 1999 at 22:30:50 (EDT) Does anyone know where to get stretch wovens in NY? I've checked several stores in the garment district and am having a really hard time. J. B. NY, NY USA - Wednesday, October 06, 1999 at 13:20:01 (EDT) hey lise-anne - if you get a chance to scan in the fabulous-sounding images of you in your red mohair, save them as JPEGS and send 'em to my email, and i will put 'em up in the photo gallery! webgirl <webgirl@sewfastseweasy.com> USA - Tuesday, October 05, 1999 at 16:23:19 (EDT) Without my Elna (a.k.a. my baby), incidentally I purchased it a Sew Fast Sew Easy, I don't think I could survive this stint in Houston. Just finished making 3 pieces out of double-sided RED mohair - i wish I could figure out how to load up the pictures. My computer fit pattern gave me a floor length skirt that is soooo sexy. for the top i used my computer fit pattern and essentially copied a calvin klein wool top I had a picture of, the cape-let I give complete credit to debbie for her inspiration. I trimmed it with some great navajo inspired fringe I bought at Dakota - I absolutely love it. Now if only it would geet cold enough.... Quick question for all of you from a new sewer stranded in houston (I'm am trying to get sympathy - is it working). What is the difference between a tuck seam and a welt seam? When would you use either one? I was at the bookstore and read about them both in a book but couldn't figure out the picture. Miss you Elissa and Debbie, Lise-Anne lise-anne putnam <sputnam@houston.rr.com> Houston, USA - Monday, October 04, 1999 at 21:24:47 (EDT) Well, It is soooooo great to finally know there are others out there that think sewing is CREATIVE!!! I am screaming so I hope you all can hear me. I live in Atlanta and have my hands in a lot of creative avenues. When I mention sewing to anyone they act like I have "rocks for brains." Thanks for acknowledging the hip and creative process of sewing. By the way, I just recently found your sight. Can you tell I was on the verge of explodeing.? Lynette Engle Atlanta, Ga USA - Monday, September 27, 1999 at 13:00:50 (EDT) mark your calendars for OCT 8th! Stitch and Bitch night at SFSE! see top of this page for more info. webgirl <webgirl@sewfastseweasy.com> USA - Tuesday, September 21, 1999 at 16:39:47 (EDT) wow, kudos for having a son that designs clothes! i always wish i'd started in the costume designing or fashion world at a young age. of course, once he learns how to sew himself, he'll be even more impressive! i too avoided learning sewing from my mom as a teen - only last year when i heard about SFSE did i finally get up the gumption to try. and now i have a pile of woolens in my house waiting to be transformed in to my Fall wardrobe! webgirl USA - Tuesday, September 21, 1999 at 13:52:20 (EDT) I have to agree that so many women don't sew anymore. I learned at my mother's knee, just sitting on a stool and watching. I now mainly sew costumes for my teenagers theatrical productions. I am amazed at the number of kids who tell me that their mothers can't even sew on a button. I've even had them tell me that their mother's don't have time to pin something with a safety pin! All the kids act like I'm some kind of genius because I can use a sewing machine. Unfortunately I haven't been able to interest my 17 year old daughter in sewing for herself yet. She says "Why? I have you!" So I guess its my own fault. My son on the other hand got involved in costume designing in high school theater and that got him accepted to one of the best Arts schools in the country. He's really going to have to learn to sew soon! He's been designing and I've been doing to building! I got him a used machine for graduation but he hasn't needed to use it yet. I think he will gain a whole new respect for the craft when he realizes that its easy to draw a pretty picture and quite another to make that picture a reality. Oh well, just wanted to put my two-cents worth in about non-sewing moms. It sure makes a whole lot more work for the one's of us that do. Jane USA - Sunday, September 19, 1999 at 12:57:44 (EDT) Thank goodness, my mother successfully persuaded me to take a sewing class when I was in 10th grade. I realized that I found a niche besides the fact that I think I'm a pretty good actress. I was thrown into a world of utter creativity. Although there were assignments in my class, my teacher at the time gave me total freedom to do whatever I wanted. I found myself developing an obsession when I started staying after school until 8 or 9 o'clock at night, just to sew. Acting was my love, but fashion, sewing was my obsession. It was like a drug addiction, and I so proud to be addicted to this. I recently just found this website through Cosmogirl and I can not tell you how excited and anxious I am to take classes and meet new friends. Unfortunately, I do not have the funds to pay for the classes. But I'm saving my pennies!! Rachel Brooklyn, Ny USA - Saturday, September 11, 1999 at 17:08:22 (EDT) Just thought I'd give everybody the heads-up about a really cool website a friend of mine runs called ReproDepot--she sells vintage reporoduction fabrics and they are as cute as can be! She's got everything from Turn of the Century children to '40s flowers to wee li'l cherry prints to '50s amoeba-type stuff to rodeo cowboy prints (like the kind a boy would have had for curtains in the '50s/'60s). So if you're looking for a unique fabric for your project, check it out--she ships fast, too. (www.reprodepot.com) This site is great, I'm gonna keep coming back and checking it out! Itcheroo <itchie@saltymag.com> Seattle, WA USA - Saturday, September 11, 1999 at 14:26:11 (EDT) i dont know what part of LA you hang out in, but i think a lot of LA types wear way funkier outfits than the dull NYC "uniform" - tank top with gray kneelength skirt with pashima shawl! but, yes, i agree that most of our culture promotes buying, looking the same. definitely more people could benefit from sewing their own! former LA LA girl USA - Wednesday, September 08, 1999 at 11:53:29 (EDT) KNITTING is SO IN this Fall! at least, wearing handmade knit stuff is! there are a lot of new knitting classes in the 2-3 night class area on the home page. Any way some of your class directions can be purchased to be done at home e.g. the knitted babushka? You need to share this info and enthusiasm and ideology with those who are not able to get to NY. Fran RI USA - Thursday, July 29, 1999 at 19:14:00 (EDT) Please consider putting teaser tips or techniques on your website for those of us who cannot attend classes. It is hard to sew in a bubble--for instance, nothing fits better than material with a bit of stretch, but without a serger, how can I get it to sew right? The employees at the nearby fabric place don't seem to understand today's fabrics or designs. Ruth <rrlamb@connix.com> USA - Wednesday, July 21, 1999 at 19:36:40 (EDT) Hi Elissa, Checked out your site - it looks great!! Jean Louie <realgrl04@aol.com> Queens, NY USA - Thursday, July 15, 1999 at 11:46:28 (EDT) made a smash hit with my newly made pink silk pants complete with zipper ankle slits and a matching purse! i love making purses! different every time as i experiment... webgirl USA - Monday, July 12, 1999 at 11:22:32 (EDT) Elissa, Had a $150 gift certificate to Bloomies, so I blew the whole thing and bought the cutest designer sundress - It's so simple and it's made out of the lightest cotton - like a bed sheet! I would have never spent my own $$ on this (can you believe $150 for a glorified bed sheet), but since it was essentially free, I figured what the Hell - will be in for the next finish your skirt night to copy the pattern...and share it with you! xox Alison :) Alison <RaffaeleA@aol.com> NYC, USA - Thursday, July 08, 1999 at 23:13:34 (EDT) oh no! i can't find my instruction booklet for my machine! big NONO! i shoulda taped it to my machine - any idea where to get a replacement? i guess i will try calling the manufacturer.... it's a WHITE brand machine. april USA - Monday, July 05, 1999 at 23:43:46 (EDT) well i'm out here on the west coast, and lemme tell you -- people are CASUAL about sewing and doing all sorts of random things to their outer wear. little metal studds pushed through jeans and shoes, upholstery outfits, and modified vintage wear. people don't mind looking totally crazed and messy out here. refreshing compared to SOHO snobbery! kudos to the west and the country fashion sites! webgirl USA - Sunday, June 20, 1999 at 03:56:46 (EDT) Well I've just gone from Soho to Hicksville and what us city girls can learn from the country girls! I'm out here in Ohio picking up tips from Grandmas and Amish girls. Most exciting so far, I've taken my straight pins out of my sewing room and out in the streets, using them to secure my head scarves in a way knots and bobbie pins can't. Unlike saftey pins they're sleek and almost invisible , and I haven't stuck myself yet. But if any of these country boys get fresh you can be sure I'll find yet another innovative use for my little straight pins! Stephanie Markowitz <newyouth@earthlink.net> USA - Monday, June 14, 1999 at 19:26:55 (EDT) well welcome! the best place in NYC for cloth in my opinion is MOOD fabrics - i believe it is on 37th street between 7th and 8th on the 10th floor - check information first to get the exact address. the fine SFSE workbook led me there! many, many fabrics. i love it. webgirl <webgirl@sewfastseweasy.com> NY, NY USA - Saturday, June 12, 1999 at 02:22:02 (EDT) Hi from Oz. I really love your site and the idea behind your sewing classes is great. I need your help!!!!! I will be visiting New York in August and I have been trying to locate unusual fabric suppliers, both wholesale and retail in your fabulous city. I have been searching the web for days and so far have come up with zilch. I thought that some of you like minded sewwers there could give me some leads. God I love this site, but I only have one question. I love making my own clothing - I get such a joy out of it, but I figure, it's summertime, and I have no tube tops, but plenty of cute material. I can't make one however, because I have no patterns. If anyone could help me out, email me and tell me about it. Thanks ever so much, Courtney Courtney <iuvrgrl@aol.com> Enfield, CT USA - Sunday, May 16, 1999 at 18:24:28 (EDT) Hi Everyone, I love the site! I recently acquired an old Singer machine, black metal with a wooden case. It has one of those weird bobbins. I live near a lot of warehouses full of garment shops and near the end of the week their dumpsters are overflowing with material remnants. The materials are quite clean because that is all that is in the dumpsters. Usually it's weird fabrics that I would never buy. It's a little secret of my neighboorhood! Often I mail off scraps to my favorite sewer friends who love the odd colors and fabrics! Jezebel Rocker San Francisco, USA - Friday, May 14, 1999 at 14:21:38 (EDT) I had a nice time speaking to Elissa on Wednesday. I never met someone who could design! I picked up some great fabrics in New York City and I'm going to start making all kinds of things again. Maybe handbags, evening dresses, and tops. I'd like to come back to New York City again next year and visit. Sorry about leaving the soda cup and soda bottle in your the room. And I found these track pants that I loved (no drooping or biting crotch!) BUT they were too long. BUT did I have to wait a week for the tailor to hem them? Of course not!! I fixed them myself in 20 minutes flat and wore them out that night...and my stiching is straighter than the original. Alison <RaffaeleA@aol.com> NY, NY USA - Friday, April 30, 1999 at 23:01:12 (EDT) yeah, i saw that article too! i thought it was interesting (sad / funny) that the author pointed out that gucci's feathered jeans are OVER now that there has been an article in the Daily News showing readers how to sew their own! what does that mean?? that if you can make it, it ain't fashionable? jorja <webgirl@sewfastseweasy.com> USA - Monday, April 26, 1999 at 19:59:36 (EDT) I was reading my "Style" section of the New York Times on Sunday and I happened to read that this season's style prediction is back to the 60's. Sexy, hippie with a new twist - $$$$$$$. Hip huggers, bell bottoms and flowing peasant shirts made in expensive fabrics (cashmeres, etc.) and sold at your local designer rip off store on 5th Avenue. What do you think? Hippie and Expensive....sounds like a contradition in terms to me! I got mine at Salvation Army and Goodwill. Right now I am sewing a circa 1964 skirt and jacket. The pattern was 29 cents. Lovin' it! Sue Miller USA - Thursday, April 15, 1999 at 13:44:45 (EDT) Saw a dress at Saks: about one yard of cheap fabric, sheath style: side seams conventional, darts inside out, no finishing at neck or hem. $400. I believe I can do that for $10, so fast, so easy! Sewers, unite against shoddily-made over-priced rags! Madame X CA USA - Thursday, April 15, 1999 at 13:40:30 (EDT) okay Christine - points taken! Sometimes we just get in such a buzz over something that we forget to mind our Ps and Qs.... SFSE gal NYC, USA - Thursday, April 15, 1999 at 12:14:32 (EDT) Dear Stitch and Bitch Cafe: I love the concept, the creative energy, the turn off the tellie, the button up that beeper . . . But the typos and grammar suggest a fraying hemline. Trim the lines just a bit, for a better fit and a flatterin' flow. Stitch on! But make it Bitchin' stitchin'! Live in your own world, not in the maniuplative TV news/ads/shows blend. Gap Khakis? NO way! With my machine I can fabricate my wildest dreams. You'd be amazed at how much less gets accomplished in this world because people are either too scared or too lazy. Alison USA - Friday, April 09, 1999 at 22:33:43 (EDT) i love when i see someone in a wacky outfit - all the better if she made it with her own hands!!! geena USA - Thursday, April 08, 1999 at 14:54:40 (EDT) you bet it's time to get UNIQUE! blown out hair and banana republic turn even the cutest girls in to dull looking dames. looking like everyone else - what's the point? sharee USA - Thursday, April 08, 1999 at 03:21:51 (EDT)
