great site bitch cafe I came to your store, recently and noticed that you don't finish your seam edges, on any of the garments. I was taught to finish my seams. Is it a good idea to finish a seams, in a garment or not. Just a suggestion. Marie Brooklyn, NY USA - Monday, December 30, 2002 at 02:42:45 (EST) Hey everyone... just found this place and its great! Just wanted to know if anyone could give me any pointers on finding some great hippie fashion patterns. (i.e. patchwork, side panel jeans, apron tops, etc.) I am just learning to sew (I have very little experience) but want to make sure I learn what I would really like to sew. Thanks All! =0) Missy <hempquestions@lycos.com> Fall River, MA USA - Saturday, December 28, 2002 at 14:47:57 (EST) My apartment gets too much sun and is so hot even in the winter - I am dreading what it will be like come summer. I would like to make a set of drapes with some kind of reflective lining to reflect the sunlight away. Does anyone know of an appropriate material to do this? Rebecca New York, NY USA - Thursday, December 12, 2002 at 18:06:12 (EST) Hi, I've been cruising your site and I love it - but I can't afford the classes yet. I'm desperately seeking a job since I've moved back to NYC. I've lost about 80 lbs and now I'm in no-man's-land size-wise. (like a 12/13) I can't really afford the Italian suits that fit right (thank God for Syms), and I also like funky, trendy styles. I've always designed clothes that I'd love to wear, but I can't sew. So I'm saving my pennies (literally) so I can join your ranks. Actually I just had a great interview, so if I get the job, I'll celebrate by signing up for the RX class - once I'm in, you won't be able to get rid of me! Be prepared! lol Thanks for being here and getting my idea gears going. I finished my Level I class just before the summer ended and I'm looking forward to my Level II class in a couple of weeks. I am addicted. I made five skirts and about to start on the sixth skirt. PS I just stopped in by the GAP to take a look and see and I noticed the mass produced pencil skirts that look like potato sacks with waist bands. I'm noticing things that I hadn't noticed before taking the Level I class. If I wanted that skirt I could have purchased it and altered it with my knowlege from Level I, but I rather wait for Level II and choose better fabric and have a pattern made especially for my body. ADDICTED! Lisa C NY, NY USA - Friday, October 04, 2002 at 01:33:14 (EDT) for those looking for the brownie/girl scout patterns, here's an update...simplicity still has a few in their warehouse. they have discontinued making the pattern. what they have left is about $10/pattern. the material is about $8/yd. so, it's actually cheaper to buy the vest from the g.s. store. good luck! kim allen, tx USA - Friday, October 04, 2002 at 00:32:47 (EDT) I am looking for handles and accessories for handbag-making at any location in Canada. Heather <healjan@hotmail.com> NYC, NY USA - Thursday, August 22, 2002 at 11:07:48 (EDT) SFSE is the best place to learn to sew or, if you already know how to sew, to just cut loose and go for it! I bought my machine from Elissa two years ago and it has worked perfectly since. I also took the Sex, Drugs and Rock n' Roll DIY t-shirt class last night. What a blast! If you're creative and sick of the run-of-the mill fashions in stores these days, make it yourself at SFSE. Missy <missmarymissy@aol.com> NY, NY USA - Wednesday, August 21, 2002 at 10:50:05 (EDT) have you ever considered offering a class on just "the details"? i know how to operate sewing machines, follow patterns, manipulate darts, set in sleeves -- and have even designed my own items using those techniques. i fall apart, though, when it comes to putting in zippers, making buttonholes, fitting facings and all of those other little details that make clothes look like real clothes, and not pathetic halloween costumes. maybe i'm the only person in this boat, but i'd certainly love some instruction on how these things should really be done. thanks for offering this forum. emily <bradamant@hotmail.com> - Monday, August 19, 2002 at 14:41:57 (EDT) I am trying to locate a users manual for a New Home model 3303 sewing machine. My husband brought it home and said "it works." So far in the year since I inherited it, it has worked fine as a lamp table! Can someone please tell me where I might find a manual? Thanks Deb <bmiller@vip1.net> MO USA - Thursday, August 15, 2002 at 09:37:10 (EDT) Dear Alie, For a quick fix just cut the pants 1 1/2 " longer turn up press and use fiseable tape made by stitch wizard. Later when you have more time you can hand stitch. I have a sarong I hand hemed over 10 years ago and it is still holding up. Use small stitches and knot every 4-6 inches that way if the stitch brakes only portion will fall. Let me know how it goes. Dahlia <dahliaprose@yahoo.com> New York, NY USA - Monday, May 13, 2002 at 12:30:24 (EDT) Mother's day is a day to celebrate all mothers, grandmothers, anunts, women who mothered many people and women who have influenced our lives. After all what gives you the curiosity to go to this site? Your mother sewed clothes for you, your aunt who sewed, or your next-door neighbor who sewed, knitted and croched. Think about this. If you already have children, plan to have kids, or work with younger people. What special skills or family craft or recipe will you pass on? Will you just have a cell phone to pass on? Here are A few women I celebrate:Beverly Sills, a great Opera Diva and brilliant businesswoman, Senator Hillary Clinton; she taught me what really is important. Martha Stewart, anyone who can make a silk purse out of a sow's ear is my kind of woman, Oprah Winfrey, she made reading fashionable, Meg Whitman chief executive of EBay, a woman with vision who understands error and humility. Why not add to this list of women you admire. Elissa@S.F.S.E. N.Y.C., USA - Sunday, May 12, 2002 at 22:11:59 (EDT) Lee, Go for it and sign up for the level Practice makes you better. Maybe even sewing on some fun patches to the girls jeans or teaching them how to embroider a simple flower on their Brownie uniform. Felt is great and so is polar fleece for beginners. A finished project like a cell phone purse with button on it could be very rewarding as well. S.F.S.E. N.Y.C., USA - Monday, May 06, 2002 at 23:54:38 (EDT) Hello to all my SFSE friends.
